WATER BAPTISM E02

WATER BAPTISM E02

The Water That Divides

WATER BAPTISM

Water baptism does NOT save:

As a ceremonial rite on its own

Just asking someone to baptise you in water will not save you on its own

A Symbolic Act of Obedience

Water baptism does not make you into a Christian

Water baptism does NOT, in itself, save a person

But a Christian is baptised in water because they are saved

Make or Mark

Water baptism does not make you into a Christian

But water baptism marks you as a Christian

Blood or Water

The Blood of Jesus Chrisy (not water) cleanses us from the guilt of our sin

Saved by grace (not water) through Faith

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

New Birth – Born Again

Is cleansing

Forgiveness

These come from God

This is getting a brand new start again in life

“Baptism” – its meaning in Bible

dip, immerse or submerge

To completely cover as in buried

New Testament Believers

were SUBMERGED in water

To be submerged or covered completely over – like being buried

You need a ENOUGH water

– not just a “sprinkle from a bowl”

but to submerge as in a burial

You go down into the water

You come up out of the water

Enough to water a flock

Exodus 2:19 And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.

If you need enough to water a flock you also need enough water for a symbolic burial

Enough water for baptisms

John 3:23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

The reason that they were baptising people in that region was because there was plenty of water on hand.

JESUS CAME UP OUT OF WATER

Mark 1:10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

Let’s read this story:

Enough water for them to go down into and then come up out of

Acts 8:35-39

Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

GOING DOWN INTO WATER

Acts 8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

COMING UP OUT OF WATER

Acts 8:39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

SYMBOLISM OF

SUBMERGING IN WATER

Buried by baptism

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Life After Death

Reasons why a Christian should be baptised calf

1 – You are in Obedience to Christ

2 – You are following example set by Jesus

3 – You are part of the pne and same body of Christ

1st step in Obedience to Christ

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

2nd step You are following Jesus example

Matthew 3:16-17 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

3rd step Symbolic of being in the same body of Christ

It is symbol – a mark that you belong

It is a rite of passage

It is the mark of “belonging”

All the Christians in the bible had followed the Lord in being batised in water

The Jewish and the Gentile Christians were all baptised in water and were all in the one and selfsame body of Christ

1 Corinthians 12:12-13

For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Baptised into the body

Now you are part of that body

It is the place where you are born – fed – taught – grow – participate – fellowship – assemble together in the name of Jesus

Jesus had no sin of his own

but he was baptised “so that he could do all that was right”

Matthew 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

To suffer him – do as he asked

Do you wish to fulfil all righteousness and do what is right?

Do you want to follow Jesus?

Like Jesus will you suffer this water baptism now?

Will you ask to be baptised in water?
